The soul of every man desires to reach out to his Maker. The extent of man’s fall is revealed by the fact that we need help even to reach out to God. The extent of God’s love is revealed by His reaching down to us, stimulating within us that desire for Him.
We cannot be saved without praying. Everyone who has met the Lord has done so because of a prayer: “Lord, save me or I perish.” We cannot remain in a saved condition without praying, either. “As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him” (Col. 2:6). Christianity is meant to be a vital relationship with a living God. What kind of relationship would it be if neither party communicated with the other? God speaks to us through the Word and the Holy Spirit. We, in return, speak to Him through prayer. “Lord, teach us to pray.”
“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up (Ps. 5:3).
